53rd Polish-American Festival

53rd Polish-American Festival

53rd Annual Polish-American Festival & Country Fair took place at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa for five days, over the first two weekends of September - 1st, 2nd and 3rd (Labor Day Weekend) as well as on the 8th and 9th (the second weekend) of September. During this time over 22000 people have visited the Festival at the Shrine grounds.

The beginnings of this annual event reach far back to the year 1966, when the Shrine community, together with distinguished guests (such as US President Lyndon B. Johnson and Cardinal John Krol, Archbishop of Philadelphia), have celebrated the Dedication of the Main Church. Many volunteers, their families and friends have organized then, a simple picnic after the celebration, to help to support the Shrine. This ‘original' festival has inspired continuation and expansion of this event to a country faire that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year (in 1984 President Ronal Reagan has also visited the Festival) desiring to get to know Polish culture, tradition, food and much more. For others, the festival is a nostalgic return to the roots of their ancestors. This annual event is organized by the Festival Committee, made up of Shrine volunteers and friends, in cooperation with Pauline Fathers & Brothers, the guardians of the Shrine and the Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa.

53rd Polish-American Festival 2018 - Day 1 - Saturday - September 1st, 2018

Just like every year, there were many attractions on the festival grounds. As the visitors have entered through the gates, they immediately found themselves in the "Shoppers Village", where they could purchase souvenirs and goods imported from Poland or locally made. As always, the Polish apparel was very popular, helping the visitors to express their identity. On the other side of the festival grounds, by the Rosary Garden, there were amusement and carnival rides and attractions for kids and teenagers. In the center of the grounds, on the Pavilion Main Stage, as well as on the Village Stage (located in the "Polish Village") many performers provided excellent and amusing entertainment for all the guests. This year we were hosting many different musicians and music groups, such as: "The Golden Tones", "No Problem", "Nova Dance Band", "Polish American String Band", "John Gora Band", "Jimmy Sturr" and many others. Children from Our Lady of Czestochowa Polish Language School have also performed this year. The star of the entertainment program of the entire Festival was Andrzej Rosiewicz, a famous Polish singer, who has composed and performed many all time Polish hits. There were also few traditional folk dance groups, such as: „P.K.M - Polskie Kółko Miedzykolegialne (The Polish Intercollegiate Club of Philadelphia) and "Ojczyzna (The Motherland)" from Baltimore. Polish folk traditions, such as Dozynki (Harvest Festival) and Polish Wedding, were also presented at the festival stages.

53rd Polish-American Festival 2018 - Day 3 (Monday - Labor Day - September 3rd)

A large group of historical reenactors were stationed near the "Polish Village". Most of the groups presented historical period of XVII century, the largest among them was "The Banner of Jasna Gora". During the days of the festival they were giving presentations of chivalry, fencing, shooting and even horse riding. The group of reenactors from the World War II, is also expending every year, presenting weapons and uniforms from that period of time.

53rd Polish-American Festival 2018 - Day 4 (Saturday - September 8th)

The main part of the festival grounds was filled with different booths with traditional Polish food. The most popular types of Polish food were prepared in them, such as: golabki (stuffed cabbage), pierogi, grilled kielbasa, bigos (hunter's stew), potato placki, and many other foods. There were also delicious sweets like Polish ice cream, cotton candy, and funnel cake. The exquisite food was also available in the "Polish Village" in the Schoolhouse - homemade lard, pickles and naleśniki (crepes) and cake was served. Many visitors of the Polish-American Festival were eager to taste world famous Polish beer. Polish Vodka Tasting Experience has also been introduced this year for the first time.

Along with great food and entertainment, there was also a spiritual side of the festival.

53rd Polish-American Festival - Holy Mass

Every day the Pauline Fathers said the opening prayer and celebrated Mass for the pilgrims. A more solemn Mass took place on Sunday, September 2nd. The Church was filled with a crowd of people, who came in bus pilgrimages organized by the Polish-Slavic Federal Credit Union from New York and New Jersey. Couple hundred Haitians living in USA, have also participated in the Creole Mass at the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Many other pilgrim groups and individual visitors from different States, have come to the Shrine for the annual festival, in order to experience, learn, and taste Polish traditions and culture.
